Introduction

Figure 1

Architectural Drawing of International Space Station. This drawing shows the overall dimensions of the structure fully assembled.

A design layout for the construction of the International Space Station includes a series of dimension drawings, general arrangement drawings, and detailed drawings of component structures. Design layouts and engineering drawings are used to show the overall dimensions of the object or structure being created. Figure 1 provides a design layout with dimensions of the completed International Space Station. Arrangement drawings are known as orthographic projections.

Dimension drawings, like Figure 1, show all the component parts of a product or structure. Working drawings are used to create a portfolio (printed and electronic) for a design project proposal. In this activity, students will experience the mathematical, design, and graphical skills required for creating front, top, and side views included in technical (orthographic projection) drawings from which structures are built, products are manufactured, and models are created.
