Farming in Space: glossary

Bibliography - Related links - Download PDF of glossary

anther The male flower part, which holds the pollen.

Apogee wheat Triticum aestivum , USU Apogee wheat. A dwarf variety of wheat that was obtained from a cross between Parula and Super Dwarf wheat, the same parents as Perigee wheat.

AstroPlant Brassica rapa dwf 1/dwf 1. A dwarf variety of Basic Fast Plants bred for experimentation in small chambers in space.

average A mathematical term that represents the middle point of a group of values. The average is obtained by taking the sum of a group of values and dividing by the number of values.

bar graph A graphic representation of a set of values shown as a series of rectangles. The bigger the value, the longer the rectangle.

Basic Fast Plant Brassica rapa Rcbr. A member of the Brassicaceae family, which includes mustards and cabbages. It was bred to complete its life cycle quickly, making it ideal for education and experimentation.

cotyledon The seed leaf of a plant embryo. Monocots have one cotyledon and dicots have two cotyledons.

development Changes in an organism such as a plant as it grows.

developmental stages A series of changes that a plant undergoes through its life cycle marked by particular events. A plant's developmental stages include germination and flower formation.

dicot In flowering plants, plants that produces two seed leaves.

ECE Energy conversion efficiency. A measure of the effectiveness by which a plant produces a desired plant product. ECE = Mass of plant tissue/Hours of light X Wattage of light

egg In plants a specialized cell within an ovule that contains half of the genetic information needed to produce an offspring.

flower The part of an angiosperm (flowering plant) that is specialized for reproduction, containing male and/or female structures.

germination The emergence of the plant embryo from the seed. The first root as well as the embryonic leaf attached to a shoot (the epicotyl) emerges.

harvest To collect plant material at some point during its life cycle.

harvest index A measure of how much important material, such as seeds, a plant produces. Harvest index = 100 X Seed mass/Plant mass

HPU Hydroponic production unit. The plastic 2-liter soda bottle containers used to grow plants in the Farming in Space experiments.

hydroponic Growing plants without soil by providing nutrients in a solution instead.

life cycle The time period from birth to death of an organism.

line graph A visual representation of a set of values in which points, each corresponding to a particular value, are connected by a line.

maturity The developmental stage of a plant in which it produces seeds.

monocot A flowering plant that produces one seed leaf.

node The location on a stem where a true leaf is attached.

ovary A female organ that produces eggs. In plants a swollen structure in a flower in which ovules develop.

ovule Structures in ovaries that contain eggs and when fertilized by pollen, develop into seeds.

Perigee wheat Triticum aestivum , USU Perigee wheat. A dwarf variety of wheat that was obtained from a cross between Parula and Super Dwarf wheat, the same parents as Apogee wheat.

photoperiod The length of time that light is present in a given time interval, such as a daily 24-hour time interval.

photosynthesis A process used by plants and some microbes to convert light energy into chemical energy, which is stored in compounds such as sugar.

pistil The female reproductive structure of a flower, consisting of stigma, style, and ovary.

plant ECE An expression of the amount of plant tissue produced relative to energy expenditure. Plant ECE = Mass of plant tissue/Hours of light X Wattage of light

PLH Plant light house. The assembled box used for growing plants in the Farming in Space experiment.

pollen In plants the male structure that contains sperm capable of fertilizing eggs. Pollen is derived from the anther of the flower.

seed A mature ovule, which consists of an embryonic plant plus nutrient material within a protective coat.

seed ECE An expression of the amount of seed tissue produced relative to energy expenditure.
Seed ECE = Mass of seed tissue/Hours of light X Wattage of light

seed leaf The embryonic leaf/leaves contained in the seeds of flowering plants. Monocots have one seed leaf and dicots have two seed leaves.

seed pod A long, flat structure in a dicot plant that holds multiple seeds. The seed pod develops from the pistil after fertilization takes place.

stamen In flowers a male structure that consists of the long, skinny filament and the pollen-containing anther.

stigma The sticky tip of the female pistil, which collects pollen.

style In flowers a female structure that supports the stigma and transports pollen to the ovary.

true leaf Leaves that are produced after seed germination.

wheat head The seed-bearing structure of wheat plants.
